MiniShift setup on Windows

I’ve been constrained to Windows recently and decided that such a small inconvenience won’t stop me from trying out MiniShift on my desktop. Since constraints liberate 1)Constraints Liberate, Liberties Constrain – Fantastic talk by Runar Bjarnason from Scala World 2015 that could also be an interesting experience.

Installation

Here are just some notes to start with it. I started with installing:

After configuring it minishift to use the VirtualBox:
minishift config set vm-driver virtualbox – configure minishift to use VirtualBox

Since I installed it on h: drive, it fails to start. Related issue is https://github.com/kubernetes/minikube/issues/459
Minishift failing to start on Windows

The problematic part is:

The /Users directory is referenced and it exists on C: drive.
The simplest way to fix this is to start minishift from there. No reinstallations or other actions are required.

Commands to start with

minishift console – opens up OpenShift console in default browser
oc login --username=admin --password=admin – login using OpenShift client

Next steps

After starting OpenShift, there are no docker images available. I installed fabric8 additionally as described on fabric8 minishift page openshift-origin-console
